Milestones, although proud achievements, can sometimes trap us in the dedicated legacy of our past, but to celebrate it is fun! And must be done! Because without our past hard work, loyalty and dedication, we couldn’t prove just how great of a people and organization we truly are! So to borrow Beckwith’s gem, we’re just getting started, and at Manchester Wood the start begins with OUR 35^th ANNIVERSARY!

Manchester Wood’s 35 years of service to our community and country providing the best in American made solid wood furniture was honored this past Wednesday with aspects that touched on our fond memories, employee achievements, and a company that has ridden the storm of American commerce for the better part of a half-century.

With doughnuts from Mrs. Murphy’s in Manchester, Vermont, our favorite local coffee shop and bakery from our first manufacturing site to catering from the generational, family operated restaurant of Scottie’s in Granville, New York, our plant’s current home base; Manchester Wood provided food by our friends and supporters since the inception, and we make no mistake that from loyalty comes loyalty, and we continue to stand by all those who’ve helped through the years. So, to Mrs. Murphy’s and Scottie’s, thank you! God bless you! We’ve shared some great memories in your presence.

On that same token of loyalty, the giving and receiving aspects of Life, the day touched mostly on our amazing workers, whom without them, this article wouldn’t exist.

To Jenny and John, our newly inducted 10-year employees who received watches as a gift of thanks, Gary and John, an amazing 20 years of service, we hope our wood block plane award, resembling our logo, finds a proud place in your home. The finale of these employee achievements came down to the two people who have been here as long as the family running the place, so in that regard, they truly are family. Bev and Mike clocked in the same time our current President did on those early days in Manchester, Vermont. Their milestone this week is a direct mirror of our milestone this week. A life resembling a brand that has seen the highs and lows, the downs and ups, and we thank them for getting started with us. As a small gesture for the tremendous amount they’ve given, Manchester Wood presented them with two Equinox Rockers and an Adirondack Side Table as a gift in pride and wondrous thanks.

The Grounded Best Life: A family member of Manchester Wood

You know – I’ve begun to realize that Manchester Wood is the most sturdy, truthful, and loving group of business founders in the world (and I mean that).

I’m the grandson to the man who founded Manchester Wood …and Pierce Industries (no small note) …and was a farmer …a pilot …a medaled Korean War vet …and was the most loving, supportive man of a family far exceeding the one who writes this.

Let me give the roll count, he’d be proud to update you: We have four grandsons, eight granddaughters, twelve great-grandsons and great-granddaughters, three daughters … a son, and an encompassing love that surrounds this family; whether it be in-laws, friends, friends of friends… you get the drift: Abundance was manifested, both physically and spiritually.

I didn’t mention the other critical being that partnered and schemed this blessed life, his wife. An independent and worldly presence that stood by this trailblazing man of love in truth, and business, and who did nothing but want to give and give thanks to God and it’s world we exist in.

I’m writing a biblical crusade folks… but this is real life!

Labor Day

Grover Cleveland

Grover Cleveland isn’t known for much as President of this grand country of ours, and that’s typically a good sign. He reined in an era of no major wars, conflicts, or treacherous natural disasters that we exist in today. He was a pro-business man, and business had the main issues during his two terms.

So, with a mostly clean slate and America humming along with our newfound machines, the beginning of the industrial age, an exploding domestic boom in manufacturing was moving briskly along. President Cleveland made the labor movement, the interests of the blue-collar man and the owners where they worked, a high priority. A stake not many in Washington hold true today.

Although, the only real move Grover Cleveland made during his tenure that still captures our conscious was the holiday, Labor Day.

It began like most national holidays, recognized first locally, which occurred in New York with the Central Labor Union, and after twelve years it became a nationwide celebration following a tragedy where a number of workers on strike died at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the famous “Pullman Strike.”

The event entails great tragedy, unlawful Government actions, and fatality, but represents a business era we’re experiencing today. A fight seeking a lawful representation of the American business, their rights, both as workers and owners, whom loyally stand behind them the basic principles of economics.

Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial: A Great Change in Washington

This past Monday something of great significance occurred.

Although most would find the earthquake as the major news citing this week, for many though, the real earthquake of significance was the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, which opened Monday morning.

It’s a quiet shake in the arrangement of Washington’s National Mall where a person not of political agenda, but of a spiritual rising took a seat in-between the Nation’s two most historically prominent elite.

“From a geometrical standpoint it’s on a direct line between the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial. The brains and essence of our country (Thomas Jefferson), and Abe Lincoln, the greater uniter,” said Bill Line, spokesman for the National Park Service in an interview with Reuters.

I find it quite comforting that Dr. King sits nestled on the grounds of our memorialized fore fathers, whom outlined a new land that’s constantly sought reform from its vastly evolving people.

To bring a spiritual leader, one who fought for basic civil rights, with no party affiliation, corporate lobbyists in his ear, Martin Luther King Jr. continually shows the American people what to stand up for, whether it is race, or justice of another kind.

Our country still fights racism, but that battle seems surely won as the years pass, the greatest representation Dr. King shows today (and then), that having a dream and seeing it fulfilled has endless possibility with the power residing in the human spirit.

Today our fight in America remains one of justice, mainly between Washington politics and “the people” who work hard in its land trying to survive and wish for better days in domestic economic success.

It’s refreshing to know a man of such caliber and freedom sits at our Nation’s epicenter, and as he says in this video below, we must not worry, the promised land continues to become more present.

We thank you Dr. King, your lessons remain current, even as the times change.
