Beyond the Adirondack Folding Chairs: The Montauk Collection

8200logosetMontauk, New York is known for its fishing, surf, and beautiful beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. It’s also in the Hamptons, the epicenter of cutting-edge east coast vacation fashion for metropolitan New Yorkers. So it’s no wonder as woodcrafters from the Adirondack foothills of New York – the “North Country” – with a fashion sense all our own, we looked towards Montauk as another representation of coastal living with a heightened sense of metropolitan appeal. And that’s just what the Montauk Collection at Manchester Wood provides. With wooden slats, a simple two-piece design for easy transport and storage. From indoor to outdoor, lake house to sandy beaches; or for a day in the park for a little league or soccer game; the mobility and design of the solid wood furniture that is the Montauk Collection is a prized possession for all who seek classic affordable fashion in indoor/outdoor furniture.

The collection carries an almost 1920’s aesthetic, a day at the horse track esteem. Yet it has a softer way of showing its hard-earned craftsmanship; drawing a timelessness found only in Manchester Wood solid wood furniture; entirely made in the USA as our brand declares in its namesake.

Montauk Double Seat

Montauk Double Seat

The Montauk Collection includes the Montauk Chair, the Montauk Double Seat (Love Seat), the Montauk Side Table (End Table), the Montauk Coffee Table, and Montauk Youth Chair, fit for children 3 to 8. All pieces operate as great stationary furniture for any part of the house or outdoor activity. When it’s time to go or to stow-away, simply pull apart the two pieces and slide them together, transforming into a carrying case and storage unit of quality, handcrafted design.

As American furniture manufacturers for the better part of 36 years we take pride in our USA made furniture and the community that provides them for you. Wherever you are, from the Pacific to the Atlantic, North West to the South East, the Montauk Collection is home. You’ll enjoy this new collection as much as we have.

Continuing the family tradition, richest blessings to you,

High Point Market & It’s Sneak Peek at 2014 Trends

As a business solely dedicated to American furniture manufacturing from the Adirondack foothills in which we mill and craft our solid wood furniture – as well as the place we call our home, the High Point Furniture Market this spring showed tremendous growth potential for Made in USA furniture, and the housing and furniture market at large. It appears the rebound of the economy is in full swing with housing sales continuously rising since the last market in fall of last year. With new homes comes new furniture, with new jobs comes new inspiration, and at High Point this year we learned a few things. We found our shaker furniture style is desirable across the many, many cultures that are represented at High Point. There is a connectedness, like-mindedness in honesty, and a quality of high craftsmanship that is found in Manchester Wood furniture; and how great it was to be acknowledged by so many who stopped and visited our booth.

We’re famous for our Adirondack folding chairs, but we received most acclaim this market for our solid cherry furniture; namely the cherry coffee tables and cherry end tables with a natural beauty, a timelessness that only solid cherry provides.

The most important thing that was made clear to us this market was that USA made furniture is competitive again, not only for its quality, but also for the socioeconomic changes that are coming to be in China. They too as a nation are requesting a life of higher quality, with a better pay, and rightfully so. We never took advantage of the downtrodden social crisis in China and other foreign lands where manufacturing could be done pennies on a dollar compared to working in the US. We stayed as the Market Press reported in their article of us while at High Point, “a family business since day one…staying with the made in USA tradition.” The options of course of outsourcing were tempting due to the profit margins, but we knew we’d lose our integrity of producing quality furniture with ethical standard. So we stuck it out, continued to design and grow in ways we knew to survive. This market proved the surviving days for American furniture manufacturers are ending with more and more business returning to the U.S. We’re the strongest we’ve been in years and we’ll continue to develop new furniture and collections constantly for your enjoyment as well as continuing to provide pieces that have proven themselves as requested by you, our loyal customers.

For your interest in upcoming trends, as well as for ours as we’ll be watching closely and taking into strong consideration all that is happening in the market. We will be designing fresh new looks for your enjoyment for the rest of 2013, 2014 and beyond. High Point Market partnered with WGSN-HomeBuildLife to bring top trends for 2014. The trends were broken down into three categories – Neo-Geo, Next Nature, and N.D.A. as described below. Perhaps it’ll help you in designing your new home, your dream home, or reinventing the space you’re presently living in! All in all, expect great things to come from Manchester Wood, your American made furniture supplier these coming seasons, and the quality living product we provide.

Neo-Geo
The layering of geological formations is key in textiles and surface materials. Mineral and stone patterns dominate and a crafted minimalism help people enjoy real-time versus virtual-time.
Next Nature
Boundaries between humanity, technology, and design are redrawn as we find architecture winding through the forest and furniture growing like plants.
N.D.A
“New Digital Aesthetics” (NDA) – Designers are creating a new “rendered reality,” with real objects that look as if they belong in a virtual world. Infinite pixelization, a fading of edges, and designs that seem to go on infinitely are key.

Manchester Wood’s American Classic Adirondack Folding Chair

A limited time only Manchester Wood Adirondack Chair for sale currently on ManchesterWood.com.

A variation of this blog was featured on L.L. Bean’s Trail Mix during Labor Day weekend last year. It was written by Luke Eriksen, grandson of Manchester Wood’s founder Clifford Pierce, and Nathaniel Gibson, a freelance writer based in Southern Vermont.

Over the past century, the Adirondack chair has become a classic piece of American outdoor furniture. Originally conceived as a fairly basic design in the early 1900s in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, where our mill is presently located, has been redesigned in numerous styles with various features since its inception. The Adirondack chairs that Manchester Wood offers today incorporate the best of these refinements to make it convenient and comfortable, while still holding true to its distinct American heritage.

The design for our classic Adirondack Folding Chair originated when our founder Clifford Pierce, during the early 1980s, spent summers with the family at his lakefront camp on Lake George in the Adirondacks of New York. While taking boat rides on the lake, “the boys” and Cliff would pass by various old family estates that had Adirondack chairs on their property, set by campfire pits or on sprawling front yards and, most iconically, on docks. There were many styles and most appeared aged and worn, falling apart over just a couple seasons. Cliff reckoned it was because they were made out of pine and scrap crates, which were the common materials, used for Adirondack chairs at the time.

After learning of Cliff’s interest in the chairs, a friend and neighbor at the lake happily gave Cliff one of his Adirondack chairs to study and reference dimensions. Thus began Manchester Wood’s development of the Adirondack chair. The timing was excellent. Previously, Manchester Wood had focused on making smaller solid wood products, such as towel holders and spice racks, but during the early 1980s we transitioned to producing larger solid wood furniture pieces. The Adirondack chair fit in perfectly with this transition.

Early on it was decided that the chairs should be foldable. Easy storage was a key feature in Cliff’s mind as he had seen too many prematurely weathered and dilapidated chairs on the docks and shores of Lake George. Unlike bulkier designs that were a hassle to move and took up too much space to store inside easily, the folding design did not take up as much space and encouraged customers to keep the chairs inside over the winter.

Adirondack chair from the 1984 Chicago Housewares Trade Show

The Adirondack Chair designed by Cliff was introduced at the Chicago Housewares Trade Show in 1984 where it became a hit, and an eventual iconic brand image for one of our leading wholesale accounts we continue with today. The Adirondack Chair they knew was going to be a hit, although with a few changes. They asked for the design to be made a bit more traditional, with wider arms and seat legs, and a tapered back. “But,” they told us, “keep that folding idea!”

From this collaboration, our initial Adirondack Chair for sale was born, debuting in their catalog during the spring of 1985. Over the years it has become famous for its quality solid wood construction, durability and ease of storage, and remains the perfect finishing touch for beach and lake houses, porches, decks, patios and many other outdoor spaces.

We think that if Cliff were out on a lake today, he would be pleased to see that in the place of many of the weathered hulks that initially inspired him are the Adirondack chairs that he helped create, still in good condition thanks to their durable, folding design.

Manchester Wood is proud to announce the next generation of our folding Adirondack chair and extended collection of the same inspiration in the coming early summer months of this year… stay tuned.

DIY Branding: Lake George Photo Shoots

Manchester Wood's Adirondack Chair on Lake George, NY (click photo for full-size)

Over the past couple weeks we’ve been doing several photo shoots at Lake George, New York showcasing our Outdoor Furniture. Nestled in the valley between the Hudson River and St. Lawrence, Lake George rests in the Great Appalachian Valley; the roots of Adirondack furniture.

So it’s an easy choice of landscape when documenting our product on this historic land, a lake with an aura of the past, a place far away from existence, even though the boats roar by at a near constant these days there is still something about the beaches, islands, and majestic waters that bring a peaceful and reflective pace. We think some of these photos help show such an experience.

Lake George is a hard place to leave once you’ve arrived, and we’d like to think so are the Adirondack Chairs we produce at Manchester Wood.

We started this blog title with “D.I.Y.” – Doing It Yourself is a key element to our brand, whether as a company, or as it’s people. Our founder started this business in the basement of his home in the mid-50’s after arriving home from the Korean War to a bustling factory where we work today. When he sat down with J.C. Penney, the man, he explained how his company and himself were just “honest farmers trying to a make a living.” We aren’t farmers anymore, well some of us are in fact, but the honest pitch is a living testament, as shown in the picture below.

Manchester Wood's President rafting out an Adirondack Chair during shoot, top picture in article is result.

In order to get that first shot of our Lemon Yellow Adirondack Chair on that stand alone rock in the middle of the lake, the company President elected to hop in a $20 blow-up raft and paddle out to get the shot, with chair in tow. With seagulls and waves interjecting at times, he made it, and the picture through that effort was well worth it, as seen at top of this piece.

Hardwork and honesty are major staples of our efforts here at Manchester Wood, whether this can bring you inspiration to do what it takes for your brand, or if it helps buy into ours, we hope this sneak look gives you the understanding of how fully faceted we are, with a beautifully crafted Adirondack Chair to boot!
