An American small business makes small contribution to U.S. Olympic Team.

Kurt and Melissa Walchle, owners of Survival Straps believed regardless of Team USA’s big corporate clothing and equipment suppliers their 66 employees could supply just what they needed. And it happened. Now if only we could get them to think about an American small business making made in USA furniture for the team too!? 😉

As Bloomberg Businessweek reported*, Survival Straps, which weaves sturdy bracelets from paracord: a material made for parachute ropes, began at their kitchen table selling on EBay. However, a few years went by, things got bigger, and like how its supposed to go in the “American dream” last year they made a deal to provide the U.S. Olympic Team with Team USA-emblazoned, red-white-and-blue bracelets and luggage tags.

I guess the marketing high of the Olympics isn’t reserved for just big companies anymore like Ralph Lauren – the team’s outfit designer and manufacturer. Is this a sign of American small business being proudly represented on the world stage some more? After all, 23 million American small businesses account for 54% of all U.S. sales.** They also provide 55% of all jobs and 66% of all net new jobs since the 1970s.**

Keep a look out for Survival Straps tonight at the Opening Ceremony and throughout the the Sochi Winter Olympic Games as a representation of all American small business, like ourselves and the many, many others. Let us know in the comment section if you see them!
